Ann and Gord Baird walk the talk of sustainable living in their multi-generational home.  Features include passive solar design, solar PV with grid tie, net zero electricity, energy and water conservation, solar thermal hot water, composting (no flush) toilets, rain water harvesting, grey water re-use, a living roof, earthen floors, and natural finishes into their exceptionally beautiful, modern and affordable version of earthen architecture.  The couple’s passion and knowledge is expressed in their work consulting, building, advancing policy, research, and  in the hundreds of tours they have given through their home.  The Eco-Sense home is registered for the Living Building Challenge.   They teach that if it isn’t affordable it isn’t sustainable and live their motto Less life stuff…more lifestyle!

Our team at the eco Design Gallery is headed by J.C. Scott, artist and designer, who has been creating ecological environments for over 30 years from studios in Chinatown, Victoria, BC.  JC’s love of nature began while growing up in farm country, fostered further through becoming a boy scout and a camper and boater at an early age.  Cycling, boating, camping and hiking remain passions that get him outdoors as often as possible today.

JC was introduced to environmentalism as a topic at university through Pollution Probe while studying heritage architecture at Queen’s University, Kingston, ON.  JC set up his design practice immediately upon graduation on the west coast, painting murals, doing graphic design, slowly evolving into creating entire nightclub, pub and restaurant interiors like the Commodore Ballroom and The Teahouse Restaurant in Vancouver.

After years of generating award winning and cutting edge designs in markets ranging from ecological resort communities to major commercial projects, JC and his our team have committed to only working on sustainable design projects and we are ready to tackle projects of any size and in any location, from remote eco resorts to the finest residential estates.  Based on listening to our clients and establishing a sensitive needs analysis, our experienced team will draw, plan and finish your dream green project down to the last healthy detail.

John Gower has been practicing home design for 20 years. His Fernwood-based firm, Gower Design Group, is increasingly responding to the 21st century challenges of climate change, resource depletion and the end of cheap energy by promoting the creation of future-friendly, small-footprint homes. Such homes are smaller than average, are healthy and beautiful, get their water from the rain and their energy from the earth, sun and wind, and are built from locally-sourced, low-embodied energy materials. Driving his commitment to sustainable design practices, John maintains his focus on the deepest questions of sustainable culture – asking how we can achieve a harmonious place in nature through the acts of building and dwelling.
