It’s okay to admit that you’ve ignored the big “it.” You thought the green movement was for hippies, or hipsters, tree huggers and envi
ronmentalists. It’s not like you don’t recycle. Oh no! You dutifully recycle paper, plastics, tin cans and glass jars just like your mama taught you and wonder what more on earth you could possibly be expected to do. (Of course, in a pinch, you would toss a bottle in the trash can at the park – thinking only die-hards would truck it home, and you certainly don’t consider yourself a die-hard. Besides, you tell yourself, you’ve got too many other things to worry about).
It’s not that you don’t like Mother Nature. In fact, you quite adore her. You hike or bike or row or run and enjoy all the trails this city has to offer. You just like doing things the way you always have and buying the things you always buy and sometimes you rationalize that the world can’t be that bad off -
But, you finally admit to yourself that the future snuck up on you, bit you on the butt, and now the green movement is here to stay. You hate to admit it, but you’ve got to evolve out of necessity. You’ve got to become one of them.
If it makes you feel any better, you aren’t alone! Until a couple months ago I was tossing Starbucks to-go cups like there was no tomorrow. And, then suddenly, I realized that bit about tomorrow very likely might be true if I didn’t get my act together.
Out with the Old, in with the Green
Lucky you, the best thing about going green in Victoria is the amount of local resources right at your proverbial doorstep! The local green, eco-friendly, organic and sustainability centered businesses and resource centers in our city are utterly remarkable. Going green is more than possible, and there is no better place to start than at the Organic Islands Festival (where you will find 150 exhibitors and all the tools to get you started).
If I can do it – so can you. This burgeoning greenster now has an apartment compost (nope, it doesn’t smell), biodegradable, eco-friendly cosmetics, a ticket to the Organic Islands Festival and a growing social conscience.
And you know what? Going green doesn’t change who you are. Being part of the green movement doesn’t make you anything! You, in fact, do the making and therein lies the beauty of it. By being green, you make the world a better place.

We did come and enjoy the music, food, people and the festival this weekend. It was awesome! The music was great, food was incredible and we left with a fistful of information and a gratifying feeling about being part of something good.

Great post. It’s true we have the power!
Thanks for reminding us that although our household recycling is an important part of being environmentally conscientious our green effort shouldn’t end there. The Organic Islands Festival sounds like a fun place to discover other ways that we can learn to become more eco-friendly. Thanks for your encouragement that we can each make a difference, Chelsea. I want to be a better “greenster” too!
There will be so many things you can learn at the festival. This year’s Sustainability Expo will focus on “Everything Sustainable for your home and garden”. Over a dozen booths will provide practical tips, products and services to make greening your home easier. The expo participants will be listed on the website soon.
Well said Chelsea. Just last weekend I made the choice to tuck that bottle in the trash at the beach instead of taking it home. I knew better and I knew there was a better choice – but I rationalized my decision away. Thank you for speaking into my lack of green”ness” without making me feel like there is no hope for me to change. The Organic Islands Festival sounds like a great place to get back on track … I look forward to your next blog …
Thanks Frederick for your honesty. I find myself continually slipping back into bad habits. For example — I rarely seem to remember to bring my coffee mug with me. Likely because I usually lose it and regret the money I spent. My challenge is staying organized enough to do all the things I know that make a difference.
If you’re in uncomfortable position and have got no money to go out from that point, you would need to receive the http://lowest-rate-loans.com. Because that would aid you for sure. I take college loan every time I need and feel fine just because of it.
This is the great idea. I think that is usefull for us.
