I just had the chance to speak with Ryan Clark, manager of 12 cubed sustainable micro housing company. 12 cubed, I discovered, builds modern stylish homes that fit in a 12 ft by 12 ft by 12 ft space. The house fits two comfortably and space is available for four for those out of town guests.

The Organic Island Festival is in Full Swing!

What a beautiful morning! The morning dew glistens in the shrubs, the sky is clear and the sun is hot, and in the midst of the lush beautiful foliage here at Glendale Gardens, activity has exploded! The Organic Islands Festival is in full swing running today and tomorrow. Tents have mushroomed all over with a mass of activities and information to explore. The song of the birds swooping over Viaduct Lake will soon mingle with the sweet sounds of great folk musicians set to play for the day and will set the back drop for the sustainable transportation forum, about to take place in just over two hours.
Don’t miss your chance to explore over 100 great exhibitors and the diverse flora here at Glendale Gardens…. The organic ice cream and the green drinks await.

With the popularization of many alternative forms of energy, the number of solar-powered gadgets ranging from those cute little gardens lamps to even potentially solar powered cameras is not surprising. What may be unbeknownst to you is that with the help of Kevin Pegg and EA Energy Alternatives Ltd, the Organic Islands Festival has its very own solar power plant. This miniature power plant will produce 6 – 8 kWh over the weekend. That’s enough to power over 7 laptops, a cash machine, several blenders, a cooler, a gelato cart and plenty more, all present in the village at the festival.

Newlywed WWOOFERS at Festival

Before Breezesta Poly Outdoor Furniture, the great outdoors wasn’t so great on outdoor furniture. Metal rusted. Wood splintered. Paint faded and chipped. Webbing tore. Aluminum frames bent. Find out how your used ketchup bottle might become part of your neighbours new fence! Organizers of the Eco Star Award-winning Organic Islands Festival are excited about the sixth annual event which takes place July 10 and 11th at Glendale Gardens. New and innovative products will be showcased at the festival including exhibitors like Syntal Products who take your used plastic and recycle it right here on Vancouver Island into sustainable lumber that has many benefits — beyond being environmentally friendly. It’s even been recently approved for use on organic farms because it’s completely non-toxic.
You can expect the same delicious food, beverage and product sampling, and there are more food vendors than ever — almost 40 exhibitors will be providing fresh, tasty samples with fair trade, herb infused chocolate being one of the new additions along with certified organic vodka made in Pemberton. It’s not only the food and drink at the festival that’s new.
This year attendees will have a chance to test drive the $1 million Fuel Cell demonstration…

We did come and enjoy the music, food, people and the festival this weekend. It was awesome! The music was great, food was incredible and we left with a fistful of information and a gratifying feeling about being part of something good.
